I was the only person in Kigali who had ever heard of Y2K back then. That was only because my wife worked for Chase Manhattan bank IT dept and was preparing for it. However, I am not even close to your technical knowledge and skills, or my wife’s. I think you spotted that in a nanosecond. I got the Rwanda job thru a US Marine Corps buddy. You were very kind and patient in helping me set up a common services communications system in Rwanda, and getting us thru the Y2K debacle. I did a second contract with the UN in Kabul as the Air Operations Officer, basically the station manager with UNHAS (United Nations Humanitarian Air Service). It was a nice surprise reading about you after all these years. I am now retired and living in the Lower Florida Keys with my wife, dog and boat.
Jeff Kellynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-5496176756496135832018-02-22T11:16:17.787+01:002018-02-22T11:16:17.787+01:00Hi, yes, please feel free to email me directly via...Hi, yes, please feel free to email me directly via peter@theroadtothehorizon.org

best,
PeterPeterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05877671849645884790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-63300906061246209132018-02-22T05:44:37.049+01:002018-02-22T05:44:37.049+01:00Hello Peter,

I'm transitioning in my career and have some experience but not enough to get a competitive job. I heard that strategy-wise, landing a job in emergency response in usually conflict-stricken countries is often an entry into future, more lucrative work. I wanted to get your thoughts regarding work in one such high-risk location, as a female.

Could I email you directly? Please let me know.

Many thanks in advance!

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-5488750094344588632018-02-09T03:51:19.364+01:002018-02-09T03:51:19.364+01:00I hope UNESCO can find solution for thisI hope UNESCO can find solution for thisIT104 Bloghttp://www.loggerindo.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-56288622479978275162017-09-01T14:24:23.760+01:002017-09-01T14:24:23.760+01:00Very interesting story and wesite!

I am now where you were 1991, more or less, and lately I've been thinking so much of changing my career in engineering for a humanitarian career like this. Reading your story is a big inspiration, as it is exactly the kind of adventurous life I want to have. Knowing at least someone has done it before is a big motivation to try my best to do it as well. So thanks, thanks a lot! So we have to stand up in defense rather than with hate and we are not allowed to cause this shows intolerance. Islam has to be changed and seen as a political movement rather than a religion. Only then can it be controlled. Islam sees more than 3/4 of the world as infidels who either have to conform to them, be slaves or dead. They themselves cannot control this religion of peace without falling victim to it.
I also think people take freedom too far but freedom does not behead.A Lady's Lifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11973102350411443282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-217459379926521082015-01-11T21:03:47.709+01:002015-01-11T21:03:47.709+01:00Canada might be a top 20, top ten to me would be:(...Canada might be a top 20, top ten to me would be:(but maybe not in this order) Norway,Sweden,Denmark,Finland,Switzerland,,China,Iceland,Australia,New Zealand and then either Austria,Japan or Cuba.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-36306222894713236312014-10-06T19:31:13.485+01:002014-10-06T19:31:13.485+01:00Yeah forget canada hahaYeah forget canada hahaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-8556308477075805832014-03-30T05:14:00.776+01:002014-03-30T05:14:00.776+01:00They say the same about lobsters and crabs.

I hope you are rewarded for your efforts.

I am in the same situation as K.C. above and am having to figure out what to study at university with the eventual goal of landing up in Aid and Dev [more so Dev]. I understand what you mean when you say 'dont choose an education based solely on what fact that you want to work as an aid worker'.

I hope to come to an answer fairly quickly [like...by tonight] as tomorrow is the closing date for university applications! This Q had plagued me and I have thought and researched myself into paralysis, it seems.

BUT - I am curious to know what you studied and how you landed up in your field. Please forgive me if you have already addressed this is an earlier post. I have only JUST stumbled upon your website.

T.S.Johttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02819687625511123281noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-39194360396662249442013-12-02T08:10:56.202+01:002013-12-02T08:10:56.202+01:00cool!cool!A Lady's Lifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11973102350411443282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-38747588564367106192013-11-30T17:25:11.088+01:002013-11-30T17:25:11.088+01:00It's nice to be able to stop your day to enjoy...It's nice to be able to stop your day to enjoy life and beauty.
It passes much too fast.A Lady's Lifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11973102350411443282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-6124755183363310112013-10-01T11:36:43.950+01:002013-10-01T11:36:43.950+01:00Thanks Bunmi...! As I described in the post, aid organisations take all kinds of people from all kinds of professional backgrounds and educations. At this stage in your life, choose a profession on basis of what you like and are interested in. You'll be better at it. And somewhere you will find an entry point in an aid organisation.

so go with your heart. :-)

PeterPeterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05877671849645884790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21629351372307923.post-63748646730658958722013-09-25T16:52:07.330+01:002013-09-25T16:52:07.330+01:00Hello, this is a really good post and I am asking ...Hello, this is a really good post and I am asking for some advice..
